Tuck Into Classic Cantonese Dishes

The Paradise group has earned a reputation for serving up innovative yet tasty dishes and has been ambitiously expanding since its opening of its first outlet in 2002. Its latest addition is Canton Paradise at 112 Katong , opened in December last year.

#B1-15, 112 Katong, 112 East Coast Road, Singapore

Canton Paradise bills itself as an eatery offering nostalgic Cantonese favourites and dim sum as well as an array of Shunde specialities.

Die-hard Cantonese foodies will rejoice in a large variety of claypot selections, such as sizzling fragrant Wok fried Pork Belly With Salted Fish ($14.80), Wok-fried Cabbage with Waxed Meat & Vermicelli ($13.80) and Poached Luffa Gourd with Salted Pork Bone In Stock ($12.80). Also tuck into roast specialities such as the melt-in-the mouth BBQ Pork Belly with Honey Sauce ($15.80).

The Chief’s recommendations include two comforting Shunde-style poultry dishes. This fact should enlarge your peepers as Shunde is a famed culinary city in Guangdong province reputed to be the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine. So be sure to try these two dishes: smooth and flavourful Steamed Kampong Chicken in Canton Style ($15 half/$28 whole) served with a dipping bowl of flavoursome chicken jus, and the hearty Stewed Duck with Yam in Homemade Bean Sauce ($13.80 regular/$28 half/$52 whole).

Then there are a plethora of homemade spring water toufu to enjoy in large quantities without feeling pangs of guilt, in the likes of Steamed Lingzhi Tofu in Supreme Soya Sauce ($8.80), Braised Spring Water Tofu with Tomato Seafood Broth ($15.80) and the signature Steamed Tofu with Pork Belly & Black Bean Sauce with a touch of miso ($12.80).

To make it a true Cantonese meal, choose from a list of 11 wholesome nourishing soups ($6.80 per person/$16.80 per pot) such as the Nourishing Pork Rib Soup with Dried Fig & Snow Pear, Nourishing Duck Soup with Winter Melon, Barley & Lotus Leaf.

For dessert, you can try the Custard Glutinous Rice Ball with Grated Oat ($4.80 for 3 pieces), it has a molten custard centre that will most likely lead to an addiction. Wash it down with a range of Hong Kong style coffee and tea like the Paradise ‘Gula Melaka’ Milk Tea ($3.80) that is a soothing mix of tea, evaporated milk, coconut milk and gula Melaka syrup.

If you have a weakness for “yumcha”, you can go in the day time to sample tempting dim sum choices such as the Baked Honey Pork Bun ($4.50/3 pieces), Pan-fried Pork Belly & Preserved Vegetable Dumpling ($4.00), Steamed Cheong-fun Stuffed with Preserved Turnip ($4.00), Steamed Organic Brown Rice Cheong-fun Stuffed with Eggplant & Minced Meat.
