Introducing Swiss Tchoukball to Heartlanders

Tchoukball is a game that does not involve the attack of its opponents aggressively so it can be introduced to players of all ages, said Muhammad Rezal Bin Ramli President of Tchoukball Association of Singapore.

Tchoukball is a handball game with two frames at each side. The game involves players shooting from outside the semicircle and throwing the ball into the net; if the ball bounces back and lands successfully the team can throw again, if not the opposing team scores a point if it lands inside the forbidden area.

Hailed as a game for all, it encourages fair play and according to Muhammad Rezal, “no one will disturb you as compared to basketball when someone will snatch away your ball when you dribble. “

Originating from Switzerland the game is created by a Sports Scientist Dr Herman Brandt who professes: “The objective of human physical activities is not to make champions but rather to help construct a harmonious society.”

In line with the spirit of the game, The Tchoukball Association of Singapore hopes that more people can learn to play the game. One idea is to engage Playlor, a sports and social club focussed on team building. This partnership will allow people to buy passes to play at a venue and serve as a platform to introduce the game to Singaporeans.

At Tampines East CC in particular the game is already striving. There are some 30 teams playing there, under the youth executive committee. The players can join the yearly competitions such as the Mah Bow Tan Club or the Singapore Tchoukball League. The Tchoukball Association of Singapore hopes to use Tampines as a starting base to introduce the game to residents.

Said Muhammad Rezal: “This can be a sport where people can come together to play. I will start with the grassroots groups in Tampines East CC and from there more people will know the game.” He added that there are also Tchoukball interest groups in Tampines, Paya Lebar, Kebun Baru and Kampong Kembangan CCs.

The Tchoukball Association of Singapore trains primary and secondary students in Ping Yi Secondary and Bendemeer Secondary School with many of the trainees doing well in international competitions. In fact, Singapore is ranked third in the world. The Under-15 boys clichéd gold in the World Youth Tchoukball Championship 2011. Both Singapore’s men and women’s teams finished third at last year’s World Tchoukball Championships.

Come Town Hall Day on 4 March there will be tchoukball competitions held at the grassland beside the Tampines MRT. Some 150 participants will take part.
